We, the community of Penn State, call on the University to employ its vast resources to combat climate change and become a responsible leader in creating a more sustainable future.
We believe that Penn State is falling short of the goals set out in the Strategic Plan. The University not only has the capacity, but also the obligation to take more aggressive action to address climate change in the Penn State community and around the world, and it should do so by acting on the following recommendations:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions as rapidly as possible, setting a specific date between 2030 and 2040 for reaching net zero emissions.
- Prioritize research efforts into carbon-capture technology, agricultural carbon sequestration, and carbon neutral fuels, and using our institutional partnerships to accelerate their deployment.
- Divest from fossil fuels and invest in the green economy, especially energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and zero-emissions transportation.
- Reallocate a portion of the existing student fee towards sustainability initiatives.
- Improve efforts to incorporate sustainability education into existing curriculum.
- Create a Climate Action Commission made up of Penn State experts charged with the capacity to study, set policy, assess and publish progress on our climate commitments.
Whether you are a student, staff, faculty, community member, or affiliate, now is your chance to become a proud member of this green community that is uniquely prepared to take on the challenges of our age. Sign below and lend your voice to our movement to create a more sustainable future at Penn State.
