OUR SHARED VISION

Climate Change will impact each and every Penn State community member in a different way.

The Penn State Climate Action movement should reflect the diverse perspectives on what a sustainable future actually is. Our Shared Vision was created to be a space for the members of our community to share what they think about climate action, how their work relates to the UN's Sustainable Development goals, and to describe their own personal experiences and unique relationships to environmental issues.

As part of this initiative, student organizations from across the commonwealth are sharing what meaningful climate action means to them, and what they envision in a more sustainable Penn State.

The goal is to supply a transforming and fluid vision that incorporates unique and important perspectives into the sustainable pillars laid out by our petition.

The Schreyer Honors College (SHC) Student Council is an organization that serves to promote the interests of and represent students in the Schreyer Honors College. We look to create a welcoming and successful environment that advocates for the well-being of all students. As an organization, we believe that sufficient education about and awareness of sustainability initiatives are necessary to face the threat of climate change. We acknowledge this problem and wish to do our part by uniting with other Penn State groups with the common goal of creating a better future for our planet.

The SHC Student Council fully endorses the goals of the Penn State Climate Action Petition. We support the goals of setting a deadline to reach net-zero emissions, incorporating sustainability education into the curriculum, and furthering research into energy efficiency and carbon capture technology. We encourage the Penn State administration to step up and take measures to fight climate change. As a world-renowned university, we have the opportunity to be a global role model for countless schools and organizations. We look forward to seeing Penn State take definitive steps toward becoming a leader for other institutions as a sustainable university.

As runners, members of the Penn State Cross Country Club benefit each day from the gifts given to us by Mother Nature. Whether racing across fields or running up the ridges that harbor Happy Valley, the preservation and conservation of the environment is something that all of our members hold close to our hearts. As time passes, greenhouse gas emissions and global surface temperatures continue to rise. This has a detrimental impact on our climate and environment, which in turn harms runners around the globe. One instance occurred this past summer when thousands of acres of forest across the western United States and other areas around the world were burned, undoubtedly due to the climate crisis. This not only led to the destruction of these acres and the life that resided within them, but it also caused the sky to turn red with ash. The air quality was so poor that running outside became impossible. Unfortunately, this is only one example of climate change hurting our environment and preventing runners from being in the great outdoors. More locally, our runners see the effects as well. In 2019, we saw some of the hottest months on record, and this led to much of the same in 2020.

Therefore, the Penn State Cross Country Club endorses Penn State Climate Action to not only preserve the sport we love, but to protect the environment we love doing it in.

Earth House, a special living option in North Halls, works towards making Penn State and the State College community more aware of its environmental impacts. Not limited to only students in the College of Agricultural Sciences, Earth House welcomes members from all majors and strives to educate and to promote sustainable living to the club and to the surrounding community. Through social gatherings, community service events, and sustainability initiatives, Earth House members work to address issues including the following from the UN Sustainable Development Goals list: sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, and life on land. As a club and as students, we recognize the impact that our actions, university, community, and country have on the environment; furthermore, we would like to see Penn State take more concrete actions to minimize the impact that it exerts on our planet.

Awaken State is a multigenerational initiative devoted to increasing awareness of environmental topics and improving Penn State’s response to the climate crisis. We work to connect with students, faculty, and community members from across Penn State to facilitate climate activism and education. We believe that students must be better educated about climate change in order to be prepared for the environmental challenges they will face in their careers and lives. We believe Penn State can instigate change on a global scale by preparing students to advocate for future generations, vulnerable populations, and the Earth’s climate.
One of Awaken State’s main initiatives is the Climate Crossover. The Climate Crossover is a campus-wide initiative to provide faculty with the resources they need to teach about climate in the context of their curriculum - and thus provide students with relevant environmental education. We see this initiative as being closely tied to the educational goals of Penn State Climate Action. The Climate Crossover already reaches thousands of students each semester, and we believe that further focus on the issue could expand that impact to every student at PSU.

Awaken State is proud to work alongside Penn State Climate Action to promote an engaged, educated community at Penn State.

Schreyer for Women

Schreyer for Women is committed to championing women and women’s issues, promoting education, and — broadly speaking — empowering our members to change the world. SfW recognizes that sustainability and climate justice are critical issues, and we assert that women and girls play an important role in the future of our planet. Project Drawdown highlights Women’s Education and Family Planning as two of the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions, with an estimate of 85.42 gigatons of carbon dioxide reduced by 2050. Reflecting on the importance of our mission in the fight for climate justice, we will continue to uplift and engage female students locally and internationally, and we pledge to utilize and promote eco-friendly solutions for our programming and among our members.

Our mission is closely tied to Sustainable Development Goal #5 (achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls), and we envision a Penn State community in which women are equal, respected, and celebrated. We commit to that vision through our programming, which supports our members academically, professionally, and interpersonally; and which engages our members through service and women-focused initiatives. Some examples of our programming include: professional development and networking events, annual International Women’s Day events, mentoring programs, and community-building activities. In addition, our collaborations with external organizations (including local schools, Days for Girls, and PBS) have also helped us work with Goals #4 (Quality Education), #16 (Peace, Justice, & Strong Institutions), and #17 (Partnership for the Goals).

PSU Climate Action calls on the University to represent student values through their investments and how our own tuition dollars are spent. We feel it is important that the University not only reiterates student values, but reflects them with actionable initiatives. We chose Penn State as students, and we want Penn State to participate in a sustainable future for more Penn Staters to come.

Society of Energy Engineers

The Society of Energy Engineers has a primary goal of helping its members make strides in the field of energy. This includes the fight to increase renewables such as solar and wind power, as well as making sure we are using our energy as efficiently as possible. We help our students find careers in these fields by building professional and personal connections. SEE will bring in/visit speakers from different jobs and organizations to talk to its members about the current state of the industry, as well as the innovations that are made every single day in our field. It usually turns out that the most important innovations come out in the form of sustainability technology.

Penn State has made some strides forward in the past few years on becoming a more environmentally friendly campus, but there is always more to be done. Whether this school implements more energy efficient systems or integrates renewable energy into their grids, we believe PSU can do more to go green. The Society of Energy Engineers endorses Penn State Climate Action because our students understand that the clock is ticking, and we need to take every step possible to become more sustainable.

The American Solar Energy Society firmly believes that the future is not only green, but solar as well. Our members are dedicated to advancing all things solar not only in our Penn State community, but in surrounding communities as well. Through technical workshops, networking with industry members and participating in solar design competitions, ASES immerses members in the solar industry and looks towards a future where all of our energy is clean energy.

While Penn State is moving in the right direction, we feel that they can do more in terms of transition to a cleaner, greener future which is why we endorse the Penn State Climate Action petition. Caring about the planet is not an option, it is our duty as Penn State students to be aware of our individual impact on the environment as well as the University’s role in transitioning to a more sustainable future.

Learn More About Days for Girls
We hope to see the university step up to these goals by providing adequate education on the subject of sustainability and also by encouraging and facilitating sustainable swaps for students. It shouldn't be a challenge for students to make more environmentally-friendly changes on campus, and we hope to see more students taking advantage of these options without seeing them as obstacles to going green. At a truly sustainable Penn State, every student should have equal opportunity to make sustainable choices with knowledge and guidance from university leadership.

We believe that education, whether that be in the menstrual health or sustainability space, is the first step towards meaningful and long-lasting change. As a new student organization, we have taken on sustainability projects in the realm of menstrual health, such as our distribution of reusable menstrual cups. The solutions to period poverty proposed by Days for Girls at Penn State always hold sustainability at the forefront, and we believe that this mindset should hold true for every decision made by university leadership. We would like to see the university encouraging the grassroots work of students who are passionate about this topic, and to provide resources for all students to find a role in the mission. Supporting the vision of sustainability currently being expressed by students is absolutely essential, and we hope that students and the university alike will be receptive to gaining education in this essential learning space.

Learn More About Marine Science Society
The Marine Science Society envisions a sustainable Penn State that is aware of how our actions at Penn State can impact ecosystems in our Oceans too. We are committed to educating our members and providing opportunities to volunteer in our Penn State community through guest speakers, documentaries and watershed clean ups. The pillars that most resonate with us are to reduce greenhouse emissions and prioritize carbon-capture technology because we discuss the effects of ocean acidification as a result of CO2 emissions quite often. We also support incorporating sustainability education and we do so during our club meetings and events.

The Marine Science Society endorses this petition because the ocean is a carbon sink and just because you can't see what happens to greenhouse emissions doesn't mean they aren't there.
